EEF is preparing to move to Git !

We have already set up the repository, and we will mark the CVS read only right after the 1.1 Release.

EEF should be available soon in GitHub.

Following David's request [1], I modified the promotion script used by EEF and other obeo's tycho builds in order to be more friendly with the Eclipse's servers infrastructure :)

I modified the pom.xml file for the update site project, adding a post-step phase generating a properties file and copying 2 files :
- a promote.xml ant script,
- a p2.xsl xslt file.

Then when I connect to eclipse servers, i am able to run the ant script that do these steps :
- copy the zipped update site to correct drops location, and renaming it using the properties given at the launch of the build ( Type, Alias )
- unzip the same update site to updates location,
- apply the xslt transformation to the p2 metadatas in order to activate updates stats and p2.mirrorsURL indication,
- copy the p2.index files in correct location.

if you are interested in this script for your tycho build, take a look at :
http://dev.eclipse.org/viewcvs/viewvc.cgi/org.eclipse.emf/org.eclipse.emf.eef/releng/org.eclipse.emf.eef.update/?root=Modeling_Project

I would like to share a tip I've found to be able to sign our EEF project depending on a property during hudson build.

Historically, Eclipse uses some build type to determine the degree of maturity of a project. We use the same for EEF builds

I've set up my build to look at the repo every 6 hours, and it will build automatically a N build if any change is found.

Hopefully, I can kick a build manually, but hudson will then ask me for some properties :

- a build type ( default to N )
- a build alias ( default to nothing )

Then it is very simple to add a profile for the p2 repository generation that will sign the repo if the build alias is set or not !

The following piece of code is actually doing this:

http://dev.eclipse.org/viewcvs/viewvc.cgi/org.eclipse.emf/org.eclipse.emf.eef/releng/org.eclipse.emf.eef.update/pom.xml?view=markup&root=Modeling_Project

And voilà !

Now the signing occurs only if the build alias is set. I tried to sign the build if

Obviously using another property ( for example "sign" ) that is set to false by default, or i can use multiple activation (?) ( for example, if build type is R,S,M or I ) can work, too.

update : seems that blogger does not love xml code.

EEF 1.1 M3 is approaching

While some of my colleagues are enjoying the ECE, I stay at Obeo's offices to prepare the Juno release of EEF.

I finally get a good build using tycho and signing at eclipse, just in time for M3 :)

This build is available directly from hudson :
https://hudson.eclipse.org/hudson/job/emf-eef-master/lastSuccessfulBuild/artifact/org.eclipse.emf/org.eclipse.emf.eef/releng/org.eclipse.emf.eef.update/target/

You can download the zipped repository or point out to the 'repository' folder.

With this version, you can also give a try to the EMF generation using Acceleo !

10 ans déjà !

This is a post written in french, for english readers, the translation is here.

A l'époque, j'utilisais l'environnement VisualAge for JAVA.

anniversaires !

This is a translation of a post written in french, the original is here.

The Eclipse Foundation celebrates the 10th birthday of Eclipse IDE during the EclipseCon Europe in few days.

For the occasion, a site has been created retracing the history of the project: http://eclipse.org/10years/
This
site presents a timeline showing key dates in the life of Eclipse. It is
collaborative, take this opportunity to register your Eclipse projects!

For my part, I will share with you, my Eclipse adventure :

My experience in Java development begins at the EMN in 2000. At that time I was using VisualAge for Java environment.

In 2001, two of my colleagues returned from a Canadian intership with a new
IDE in their suitcase . It will become the first version of Eclipse! I
was particularly interested in its development model, based on agile
techniques (continuous build and "self hosting").

Their very positive feedback prompted me to use the Eclipse version 1.0 upon its release. It hasn't left my computer since.

I subscribed immediately to the Eclipse Foundation values : Community, Transparency, Openness.
From the beginning, I used the bugzilla, with a thin contribution until 2007.

Since
then, I was recruited at OBEO, company deeply involved in the
Eclipse ecosystem with various projects such as Acceleo, ATL and EMF
Compare.

I became an official committer on the EEF project, which this blog is one of the showcase.

I
also took part in the last 3 Eclipse's simultaneous releases trains. I am also involved to other projects and the Eclipse ecosystem
in general.
Every day, I use the various tools provided by the community (bugzilla, mailing list, wiki).

Looking
back 10 years ago, I didn't thought I will be so involved !

I wish a very happy birthday to Eclipse (and contributors) and I wish It dozens more birthdays!

It is a great honor to see that Model Focusing Tools Proposal want to use EEF for bringing Mylyn's task-focused interface in Form-based editors.

Thanks to Miles for its reports and contribution, and Ericsson to sponsoring Modeling tooling.

As a side note, EMF Compare is also another project that is sponsored by Ericsson to bring comparison for GMF Diagrams.

New project summary pages looks great !

Thanks Wayne to provides a new summary page.

" Tycho projects are now required to match the artifactId defined in the
pom.xml with the ID specified in the MANIFEST.MF or feature.xml."

This is causing some troubles with our "old" projects, built with Athena. The scripts enforced us to have the same id for feature and main plugin. If they didn't match, build failed.

Using Tycho prior to 0.13 worked, but now the validation phase breaks the build :(

I cannot find any Naming Convention for Eclipse features, just plugins :

http://wiki.eclipse.org/Naming_Conventions

In my opinion, ids must be different, but i opened a request to have more clarifications [1].

How do you handles your features id ?

Indigo is just arrived, but we are working hard for the next EEF versions.

I just finished to move the build from buckminster to tycho, it is very easy to do, thanks to everyone involved ! I am able to build an updatesite with automatically compiled modules.

This is not the only thing we are working on. Among other things : Improve import generation, better handling of event ( no more unnecessary dirty states), and many bugfixes !

You may also know that we have successfully passed our graduation review, so we will soon move from EMFT to EMF.

Finally, we plan also to move from CVS to Git for next release.

Stay tuned !

Broken NNTP/Forums

Since the upgrade of the forum software hosted on eclipse ( https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=348449 ), it seems the bridge between old school users ( nntp users, like myself ) and web users ( forums ) is not working has expected.

just a short warning for all releng people using the latest eclipse 3.7 milestones.

due to a wrong tag in the platform, using the regular composite repository is not recommended until bug 340016 is fixed.
to be clear, if you use

Today, i will not talk about EEF.

I am using for a while the b3 aggregator component, which is very powerfull to aggregate p2 repositories in a single place. It could even be used in headless mode, so you can produce an aggregated update site inside a continuous server !

So i was wondering if i can use it as a mirror application, because i love the editor and its features. i tried to mirror swtbot repository along with helios and eclipse update sites.

Unfortunately, it produce only a repository with the last version of the artifacts, so i asked into the b3 <strike>newsgroup</strike> forum if such a way to do is possible.

I searched a bit before posting my question and found several peoples asking for the same problem, and having few answers.

I know that Thomas Hallgren ( b3 co-lead ) is replying very quickly into these forums ( not as quickly as ed, though :D ) so i created a feature request into bugzilla, because it was clearlynot a feature b3 supports yet.

This morning i was a little surprised to see some comments and propositions to my initial request, sign of an awaiting feature of the community.

The interesting thing with such an open source community is that initialy b3 is not intended to do mirroring but build, and ability to propose new features is always possible.

Open source make me happy some times :)

Thanks thomas and b3 team to be responsive !

EEF finalist of the eclipse awards 2011

Hi,

It is time to give some news about EEF for eclipse indigo.

We have changed our build system since the build server at eclipse suddenly dies, so we are using buckminster for EEF 0.9 stream.

For those who want to test the M3 release, we just committed our contribution to the release train, so you can find all the necessary informations in the installation section of EEF :
http://wiki.eclipse.org/EEF_Installation_Guide

EEF should be available in the next days in the modeling packages, too.

For EEF itself, we are making some major changes in the runtime to improve performances and generate less code.

What's new in EEF 0.8.1

Today is the final release of EEF 0.8.1, part of Eclipse Helios SR1.

You can download the new version trough the update site or via the modeling package by using the modeling discovery tool and select EEF.

So, what is new in this version ?

As always, various bug fixes, and some improvements :
- better swtbot support for EEF generated views

Helios is almost here, just 2 weeks to wait !

We had some hard times during all the RC release process, but we succeed to provide the final bits of EEF.

If you want to test it now, and see a sample of what you can creates with EMF and EEF, check out our great sample :

Go play ! :)

Acceleo Tip #3

Will the helios M6 release, each project have freezed their API. This was the last chance to implement or break API if needed !

I will just point something that changes with the last OCL 3.0.0M6 release.

This version introduced 'body' as reserved keyword for OCL so every metamodel that use 'body' as attribute name will have parsing errors from Acceleo !
see bug 305517.

But wait !

For EEF, we changed the metamodel to avoid collision, but for those who cannot change it, like UML ?

If you try the acceleo examples, there is the case with the UML2java example. for comments, there is the initial template used :

[for (cmt : Comment | o.ownedComment)] [cmt.body/][/for]

Acceleo will not be able to parse it, due to the 'body' keyword.

Here is the solution : prefix with the '_' character, aka '_body'. Acceleo will parse correctly and generates the correct code :

[for (cmt : Comment | o.ownedComment)] [cmt._body/][/for]

This may be disturbing the first time...
